Investment casting is a process in which a pattern (i.e. the part to be cast) is "invested", or trapped inside, plaster. The pattern is then burned out, and molten metal is poured into the void. When the plaster mold is dunked in water, the plaster dissolves and the (hopefully complete) metal piece falls out. [^1]
